Captured in Anuradhapura 2015
The aquatic leech Hirudinaria manillensisis distributed throughout Asia and feed on blood of mammals and small invertebrates. They infest mucous membranes and internal body cavities of humans causing prolonged bleeding leading to anaemia. The leech was 15cm in length and was attached to the vulva of a 10-year-old pre-pubertal girl after a swim in a irrigation canal (Yoda Ela) in Anuradhapura. This leech bite lead to vaginal bleeding.
